The Federal Trade Commission is stepping into a new sphere of rulemaking concerning Big Tech: what tech companies do with their users data.

The FTC is seeking public feedback on potential rules to curb “commercial surveillance” by businesses that sell or share information collected about people.

With the potential to bring fines against them for first-time violations of data-protection obligations, the planned rules would protect the personal data companies such as Alphabet and Meta collect about consumers.
