TWO super siblings from Port Glasgow have celebrated graduating from the same university on the same day.

Orla and James McCullagh made the grade together at Glasgow Caledonian University.

James, 26, graduated from his course in cyber security and networks, while Orla, 22, now has a degree in building surveying.

Both siblings already had a history of sharing family traditions.

They stepped into their father Jim’s footsteps by attending the same high school as him, St Stephen’s High School in Port Glasgow, and previously also both attended Kilmacolm Primary.

Mother Linzi McCullagh, who comes from Kilmacolm, says seeing the pair share the special moment was ‘lovely’ and made her feel ‘so proud.’

She said: “It was something else seeing them all dressed up and together.

"It it had been two different universities or different dates that we might not be able to attend both ceremonies, so it was lovely.

“Sharing their day was so special – they both looked amazing.

"Maybe we’ll have a double wedding next!”

The ceremony had been delayed due to coronavirus pandemic restrictions and Orla, who lives in Port Glasgow, is already working as an assistant building standards surveyor at Renfrewshire Council.

She said: “I thought I had missed out on the experience of graduating all together due to Covid, so it was great to have that day and to have my brother there as well.”

James began studying accounting at Edinburgh Napier when he was 18 but left the course when he felt it was not the one for him.

Now he uses his experience to help youngsters understand that their path through education can change.

He said: “I did a talk about my journey at St Michael’s Primary and at St Francis' Primary in Port Glasgow and most of the kids are going to St Stephen’s after summer, where I went.”

James has a job with Seric, a company dedicated to preventing cyberattacks since August last year.

He said: “Getting rewarded for your hard work is the best feeling in the world but on the day I was still more proud of Orla.

"For me, graduation was more for my family and it was great that we all got to have that day together.”
