A military college student says armed services officials deemed him unfit for service because he tested positive for HIV. The 20-year-old student from Revere, Massachusetts, says in a complaint against state and federal military officials that he tested positive for HIV in October 2020 at Norwich University. The student, who is identified in the lawsuit only as “John Doe,” said in the complaint filed Thursday in federal court in Vermont that he was dropped from the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and the Vermont Army National Guard. Spokespeople for the U.S. Department of Defense didn’t respond to emails seeking comment. The Vermont National Guard declined to comment.

Seventy-seven-year-old Sigmund Boganski cast a ballot in New Hampton, New Hampshire, on Nov. 8, 2016. The attorney general's office says he also cast an absentee ballot in Arizona in the same election. He pleaded guilty on Wednesday to voting in more than one state in Belknap County Superior Court. His 90-day sentence was suspended for two years on the condition of his good behavior. His right to vote in New Hampshire was terminated. A message seeking comment was left for his attorney.

The three major U.S. banking regulators say they plan to rewrite many of the outdated regulations tied to a decades-old banking law. The law was designed decades ago to encourage lending to the poor and racial minorities in the areas where banks have branches. The stated aim of the overhaul of the Community Reinvestment Act by the Federal Reserve, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. is to “strengthen and modernize” the law and end years of uncertainty about its regulations for both the banking industry as well as the traditionally underserved communities.

Attorney General Merrick Garland says an escaped murder suspect and jail officer who aided him are “regarded as extremely dangerous." Garland says the U.S. Marshals Service has taken over leading the search for the two fugitives. Law enforcement officials in Alabama have been looking for Casey White, who was awaiting trial on a capital murder case, and Vicky White, a jail official, after the pair vanished after leaving the Lauderdale County Detention Center last week. The two aren't related, but authorities say they had a “special relationship.” Garland says the two should be considered armed and dangerous and that anyone who spots them should not approach them.

The Seattle Sounders' title victory in the CONCACAF Champions League was a big deal for the club. It was also a big deal for MLS as it looks to raise its profile regionally and works to close the gap with its Mexican counterpart, LigaMX. Seattle beat Pumas to claim the title and earn a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup. MLS hopes Seattle's success is a sign of things to come in 2023, when an expanded Leagues Cup featuring teams from MLS and LigaMX makes its debut.

An agent’s brazen demand made on behalf of University of Miami basketball star Isaiah Wong has provided a rare glimpse into the way elite college sports have been transformed by student-athletes’ rights to be compensated through endorsements. The agent said, essentially, pay Wong more or he will transfer to a school that will. Labor experts say the incident highlighted a new reality: NCAA athletes in high-profile sports such as football and basketball are being treated like professionals, potentially in violation of the rules. Some labor experts say the solution may be to just start treating athletes more like employees, something the schools have resisted.

Shohei Ohtani struck out 11 over seven shutout innings, had two hits and drove in a run in the Los Angeles Angels’ 8-0 win over the Boston Red Sox. The Angels turned a two-run game into a 7-0 blowout in the eighth.

Best-selling author Dave Eggers is offering high school seniors in South Dakota’s second-largest city free copies of his book “The Circle” and copies of four books by other authors that were removed from the district’s schools. School administrators in Rapid City deemed the books inappropriate for high school students and and marked the district’s copies as surplus to be destroyed. Eggers said, “The mass destruction of books by school boards is an unconscionable horror, and the freethinking young people of South Dakota shouldn’t be subjected to it." Eggers said Rapid City seniors can receive any of the books that were pulled from the high school at no cost to them by emailing collaborator of his.

Maine’s secretary of state is closer to removing salty language from state-issued license plates. Draft rules released Thursday would eliminate references to genitalia, sex acts and profanities. The vulgarities proliferated after the state all-but-eliminated its review of language on so-called vanity license plates in 2015. Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said that inciting violence, ethnic and racial slurs, and references to criminal activity on state-issued license plates is “directly contrary to the public interest.” A public hearing is scheduled later this month. It’s unclear how many plates could be removed; state officials previously estimated hundreds.

Atlanta Hawks principal owner Tony Ressler says the team won’t repeat the mistake of complacency he says set the stage for this season’s disappointing first-round exit from the playoffs. Ressler says the Hawks won’t stand pat this offseason — even if that means paying a salary tax. The Hawks returned a young core led by Trae Young and John Collins from the team that was eliminated by the Milwaukee Bucks in last season’s Eastern Conference finals. This year's Hawks suffered a quick exit, losing to the Miami Heat in five games in the opening round of the playoffs.

Indivually, that has happened for guys like Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier. Fitzgerald now wants to see the team improve. The Devils missed the playoffs this past season for the fourth straight year and finished with just 63 points, 28th in the 32-team league.
