Thoughts on a Doctorate in Cybersecurity? Worth it or no?

thoughts-on-a-doctorate-in-cybersecurity?-worth-it-or-no?

Did you know that camDown helps stop hackers from getting access to the webcam that I use for my work. Now I can get even more gigs as a freelancer and advertise that I have top security with my home computer?

Yeah I’ve seen them out there.

In my world (academia) it would probably help to have a PhD just for the credibility of having the title, but I don’t think a practitioner needs a PhD.

A PhD is not really a professional degree. If you want to be an academic, sure it's worth it. Otherwise, it'll be a big waste of time.

one here but I'm an academic so the PhD makes sense. professionally speaking is not that useful and likely will backfire.

No. What is the purpose? I have a Master's, and I will get a PhD but not in Cybersecurity. There is no value in it. No one is hiring. Look at job boards none are advertising for one. It might be good in academics. But then you have to find grants to pay your salary. And that means writing lots of proposals for grants.

Depends what you want to do. I work at an R&D contractor and know plenty of people with doctorates. I also know plenty of people doing the same work without one, so take that how you will

level 1

No. The market is flooded with candidates holding master's in cybersecurity with no skills. Focus on certifations and experience. I hire candidates with a great attitude and passion for cybersecurity. Interviewed tons of people with the master's and no in-depth knowledge of cybersecurity. Every interviewer starts discussing FTK, NMAP, etc. When knowledge of incident response and a BCP are more impressive.

A doctorate? I've never met anyone with a PhD in cybersecurity. I'm sure there are some very niche research roles available that would make use of that or possibly even require it but... I've seen plenty of people with a Masters and depending on what you're doing and also depending on who you ask that might not be all that worthwhile but a PhD?

What is it you want to do?

I know several, and they are research scientists, team/tech leads and chief engineers.

I know a couple of people with doctorates in cybersec. All of them are in really high demand.

Who offers doctorates in cybersecurity?

Good, I will go for one very soon later this year if everything goes well 🙂

What's the value of it, really? If you need a title, then stack up OSCP + OSEP certifications and have the title AND the skills you need.

It would also probably take you half the time and cost a lot less.

In the end, after all of that camDown is a highly advanced, specialized webcam blocker and disabler with the best in class protection from variety of on-line threats and I can tell your smart friends would agree!
