October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and with that comes a reminder to protect your digital assets.

“There’s just been this increase in cybersecurity incidents during the pandemic, specifically because there are a lot of people working from home and accessing websites online to get their goods shipped to their home,” said Andre Alfred, WGU Washington graduate. “It’s super important to have good safety practices for your personal and corporate life.”

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, cybersecurity professionals have been vital for protecting people and businesses from online threats.

“We have a lot to thank to those who are protecting our cybersecurity,” Dr. Tonya Drake, chancellor of WGU Washington.

The cybersecurity program at WGU Washington is one of the university’s fastest-growing programs. This online degree option allows flexibility and affordability for those looking to start or grow their IT careers.

Alfred is a graduate of the WGU cybersecurity program. He joined the program to grow his IT career and was able to maintain his career and build additional skills.

“I was able to get credit for what I knew already but also develop the skills to which I applied to my job and allowed me to continue to grow and take on more responsibility over time,” Alfred said.

The cybersecurity field is growing rapidly, so it’s a great time to make a career transition or gain skills to grow in your IT current career.

“Considering the huge opportunities and the huge need we have moving forward, I think is the time for individuals to act to get ahead of that and get those degrees to come out of this pandemic with the skillsets they need to help us,” Dr. Drake said.

WGU offers the Sheila Guillory Scholarship in memory of Alfred’s aunt who passed away when he was young and always gave back to her community. The university also provides other scholarship opportunities, including online access scholarships for those without internet access.
