Wawa customers who were affected by a massive 2019 data breach can now file claims as part of a $9 million settlement.
The breach, which started on March 4, 2019 when malware was placed on the company’s payment processing servers, went on for about nine months and affected some 22 million customers, the company said.
All of Wawa’s 260 New Jersey locations were affected but there is no number of customers affected available for the state, according to the attorney’s office that’s handling the settlement.
Wawa said customer debit and credit card numbers, expiration dates and cardholder names were exposed, but PIN numbers and CVV2 codes were not.
Starting Monday, Aug. 30, affected customers could start filing claims on the settlement website: WawaConsumerDataSettlement.com.
The settlement includes everyone in the United States who used a credit or debit card at a Wawa location at any time between March 4, 2019 through December 12, 2019.
As part of the settlement, Wawa agreed to three tiers of possible compensation for consumers.
Customers who made a credit or debit card purchase but did not suffer fraud on their card would be eligible for a $5 Wawa gift card.
Those who made a credit or debit card purchase and can prove there was an actual or attempted fraudulent charge could get a $15 Wawa gift card.
And finally, customers who made a purchase and can show they lost money or spent money out-of-pocket because of an actual or attempted fraud charge could receive up to $500.
Wawa also agreed to “strengthen its payment processing systems and enhance its data security practices,” it said.
