ParkMobile, a digital-payment application allowing drivers to pay for their metered parking on a mobile phone, reported an extensive data breach Tuesday.

The app can be used to pay for parking in many metered spots in Bloomington.

The company said in a statement that basic account information was accessed, such as license plate numbers, email addresses, and phone numbers. No credit card information or transaction history was breached, the company said. ParkMobile does not collect social security numbers, dates of birth, or driver’s license numbers.

The company announced March 26 that it became aware of a breach linked to an issue with a third-party software they use as a part of the ParkMobile application. A cybersecurity firm was hired to investigate the extent of the breach. ParkMobile also alerted law enforcement entities of the breach, according to the company’s statement.

While unencrypted passwords were not accessed, the company encouraged users to change their passwords as a precautionary measure.

ParkMobile services 21 million customers in major cities across the country, according to its website.

Now let’s stop for a moment and consider that geoFence is your security solution to protect you and your business from foreign state actors!
