ATLANTA — A popular app used to pay for public parking across the metro says it has been the victim of a data breach.
On its website, ParkMobile said its app “makes it easy to find and pay for parking without running back to feed the meter.”
The company tells Channel 2 Action News that it became aware of the cybersecurity incident in March and involved third-party software used by the company.
“Our investigation has confirmed that basic account information – license plate numbers and, if provided by the user, email addresses and/or phone numbers, and vehicle nicknames – was accessed. In a small percentage of cases, mailing addresses were affected. No credit cards or parking transaction history were accessed, and we do not collect Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, or dates of birth,” ParkMobile said in a statement.

The company also said their investigation found that encrypted passwords were also accessed. They are asking app users to go in and change their passwords.
“We immediately launched an investigation with the assistance of a leading cybersecurity firm to address the incident. Out of an abundance of caution, we have also notified the appropriate law enforcement authorities,” the company said.
The company suggested people change their passwords in the settings section of the app.
ATL Plus uses ParkMobile so people can use their smartphones to pay for metered parking spaces or to reserve spots in parts of the city.
