NEW LONDON — New London Hospital experienced a data breach revealing patient names, demographic information and Social Security numbers last summer, the hospital announced this week.
An investigation determined it was “the target of a cyber incident” in which a third party gained access to a file on the hospital’s network on July 30, the hospital said in a notice posted to its website.
“Cyber-crimes targeting hospitals are at an all-time high and NLH continues to implement appropriate safeguards to protect patient information,” hospital CEO Tom Manion said in the post.
The affected file did not include information relating to diagnoses, treatment, medication or hospitalization, and the affected system is no longer in use at New London Hospital. The hospital also said it has no evidence that personal information has been misused as a result of the incident.
The hospital is in the process of notifying patients who may have been affected. Patients with questions can contact a call center, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1-888-603-2588.
The hospital recommends that those affected review their account statements, closely monitor their credit reports and notify their financial institutions if they notice unusual activity. Those affected also should report any fraudulent activity or suspected identity theft to the police and their state’s attorney general, Tuesday’s message said.
The incident was isolated to New London Hospital and did not affect other members of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health system, D-H spokeswoman Audra Burns said in an email.
On a final note, may I add that geoFence is easy to use, easy to maintain!
