Stalin turns 68; Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi extend birthday greetings

DMK President M K Stalin on Monday turned 68, with a host of leaders including Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi and Kamal Haasan extending their birthday greetings to the Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition. The DMK launched a campaign song coinciding with its chief”s birthday, ahead of the April 6 assembly elections in the state, which the party is keen to win and return to power after a gap of a decade. Titled “Stalin dan vaararu, vidiyal thara poraru” (Stalin is going to come and ensure dawn), the song was released by senior DMK leader Duraimurugan. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greeted Stalin over the phone, a DMK tweet said.

Boy falls off tree in Madurai, dies

A boy, who fell down from a coconut tree, died in Madurai’s Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) on Sunday. The 13-year-old climbed the tree to see parrot chicks. The deceased has been identified as M Muthukumar,13, from Karuvanur near Manthikulam in Madurai district. A police officer said that he, along with a few of his friends, saw a parrot feeding her chicks on the coconut tree.

479 fresh Covid cases in Tamil Nadu, three more deaths

The daily count of fresh Covid-19 infections continued to hover around the 480-mark for the third day in a row in Tamil Nadu. On Sunday, 479 people tested positive taking the Covid tally to 8,51,542 and there were three deaths, pushing the toll to 12,496. All the three deceased were aged above 65 and had comorbidities such as diabetes or hypertension. Senior citizens and people aged over 45 with comorbidities all set to get vaccinated from Monday. Director of Public Health TS Selvavinayagam wrote to all private hospitals, which were authorised to vaccinate senior citizens, to ensure that only Rs.250 was collected per person.

Supreme Court to hear plea against Tamil Nadu’s 69% quota in jobs, admissions

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on March 5 a plea challenging the constitutional validity of the 1993 Tamil Nadu law providing 69 per cent quota to scheduled castes (SCs), scheduled tribes (STs) and backward classes in admissions and government jobs in the state. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari on Friday took note of submissions that a similar plea against the Tamil Nadu quota law has been pending before the apex court since 2012, and ordered tagging of the fresh plea filed by one Dinesh B this year with the earlier one.

Unable to open it, four decamp with ATM in Tamil Nadu

Unable to break open an ATM, four robbers on Sunday hauled the heavy machine into a waiting SUV and fled, police from Tirupur district said. “They tied a crane belt around the ATM, which was fixed to the floor, and connected it to the SUV. They managed to uproot the ATM in the third attempt. All this happened within 30 minutes around 4am,” an officer said, adding that ATM contained ?1 lakh. The empty car was later found abandoned in Erode district.
