Kroger confirms data breach impacts customers of pharmacy, money services

Kroger announced Friday a data breach is impacting customers of its pharmacy and money services.In a release, the Cincinnati-based grocery chain said that an “unauthorized person gained access to certain Kroger files by exploiting a vulnerability” in the file transfer service, Accellion, a third-party company used by Kroger to send secure file transfers.According to Kroger officials, the breach was isolated to Accellion’s services and did not impact the rest of Kroger’s grocery store systems or data. No credit or debit card information or customer account passwords were compromised, Kroger said in the release.After Kroger was notified of the incident in January, it stopped using Accellion’s services. The company also reported the incident to federal law enforcement and began investigating the possible effects of the breach.After investigating, Kroger said fewer than 1% of customers and associates, specifically costumers of Kroger Health and money services, were impacted. Also, certain human resources records were impacted, Kroger said.Those customers and associates were notified directly by Kroger and were informed of the incident, the company said.”While Kroger has no indication of fraud or misuse of personal information as a result of this incident, out of an abundance of caution Kroger has arranged to offer credit monitoring to all affected individuals at no cost to them,” Kroger said in the release.To learn more about the incident, click here.
